Employer Hopes To Collar Loyal Staff (Born During The Year of the Dog - You are Hired!)

Shangha, China - In new twist on the phrase "working like a dog", a company in northern China says it will hire only candidates born in the Asian zodiac's Year of the Dog.

The lunar-calendar astrology used in China and several other Asian countries counts the coming year, which begins on January 29, as a dog year.

The Asian zodiac assigns a different animal to each year in a 12-year cycle.

A personal manager for Jilin Jiangshan Human Resources was quoted as saying the company craves loyalty, honesty and efficiency - qualities associated with people born in the Year of the Dog.

Although Chinese law forbids discrimination in hiring, job ads often come with a list of conditions, including gender, age and height.- Sapa-AP

Cat Phones 911

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Police aren't sure how else to explain it, but when an officer arrived to answer a 911 call on Thursday night (29th December 2005), a ginger cat was lying by a telephone in the living room.

The cat's owner Gary Rosheisen was on the ground after falling out of his wheelchair. Rosheisen said his cat Tommy must've hit the right buttons.

Rosheisen had tried to train the cat to call 911 but was unsure if the training ever stuck. - AP

Cat Survives After Being Thrown Into A River!

MISSOULA, MONTANA - A cat was rescued after an ordeal that included being put in a weighted cage, thrown off a bridge and then stranded in an icy puddle of river slush.

Someone had put the animal in the cage, along with a stone weighing about 7kg, and tossed it into the river, but instead of landing in the water, it bounced several times on the ice and then became stuck.

A pair of passers-by spotted the animal while crossing a footbridge and called for help.

Firefighters took the cat back to their station, dried it off and fed it leftover Christmas turkey and a saucer of milk.

Firefighter Josh Macrow decided to keep it. After his shift he took it to a vet, then home to his 12-year-old daughter.

Naming it was easy, he said. "We call her Lucky."
